The Cranford Canoe Club
The Cranford Canoe Club is the last building of its kind along the Rahway River in Union County. It dates back to a time when Canoeing on the Rahway was a major recreational pastime and various Canoe Clubs engaged in spirited competitions. Yearly river carnivals were held in celebration of the townships relationship to its river. Visitors would come from far and wide to enjoy the festivities along the river. A travelogue from the early twentieth century mentions Cranford and the Rahway River as a destination and even refers to Cranford as the “Venice of New Jersey.”
The
building was purchased by the township fifteen years ago and continues to be used as a venue for canoe and kayak rentals in the summer months. It currently attracts many visitors from throughout the county and state eager to rent canoes for a leisurely trip down the winding Rahway River. Click the link below for detailed schedule and rates.

Recently the Township of Cranford with the help of Union County and The Hanson Park Conservancy completed a major renovation. The building now has a new roof, siding, windows. and a new coat of paint. The plantings around the perimeter of the building and around the new sign bed were donated and installed by the Green Thumb Garden Club of Cranford.
HPC will continue to support the Canoe Club through the sale of Cranford Canoe Club T shirts and hats. The logo was designed by CHS student, class of 2007, Caroline Holt. The shirts are available in short sleeve for children and adults and long sleeve for adults and can be purchased at the Canoe Club and at Dovetails on Eastman Street in downtown Cranford.
